Last week I made a social call at my old office and caught up with several work friends. Aside from a brief visit almost a year ago to pick up a box of girl scout cookies, I’ve had no reason to return to the space where I spent almost three decades toiling as a lawyer for the government.
Last week we met in person in court for the first time. (I'm a guardian ad litem in Franklin Ct., Vermont) Witnessing the comraderie of the attorneys and the court staff was like watching children exit for recess after a long stint indoors. So much more was accomplished than on zoom. Body language, eye rolling, proximity to the defendant ....the unspoken language that speaks volumes. My father practiced law for well over fifty years. At the end, I think he just enjoyed going to the office in his suit and tie.
I found this thought of interest: “There was nothing quite so enticing as the opportunity to create a compelling direct examination, or cross examine a known liar.”
The pause before the final phrase reminds me of your cadence.
Hi Debbie,
Last week we met in person in court for the first time.
After reading this I can only image how much you enjoyed Retriever club meetings :).
I found this thought of interest: “There was nothing quite so enticing as the opportunity to create a compelling direct examination, or cross examine a known liar.”
The pause before the final phrase reminds me of your cadence.
Love the simplicity of this line you wrote, "Judging credibility is entirely the jury’s job," and I love how as writer's our readers are our jury.
For the record, Debbie. I consider you quite credible indeed.
